5.5.2 MET Office control of the accuracy of its Public Weather Service ice forecasts

Unless a public ice forecast meets the criteria of a Severe Weather Warning the MET Office does not routinely evaluate the accuracy of ice forecasts. From this it is deduced that, in addition, performance targets are not produced. The MET Office position was confirmed in an email dated 17 February 2017 :

‘The Public Weather Service does not routinely evaluate the accuracy of ice forecasts because they are not produced, but does verify the quality of guidance provided by the NSWWS when an amber or red warning of ice, snow, rain, wind or fog is issued.’

Amber and red ice warnings are very infrequent and so very few ice forecasts are checked for accuracy.

‘The MET Office does not routinely evaluate the accuracy of ice forecasts unless they reach the level of an amber or red Severe Weather Warning’ Amber and red ice warnings are very infrequent.

In addition, the MET Office do not publish targets for accuracy.
