7 Easy wins available to the MET Office

The following easy win suggestions have been submitted to the MET Office:

1 Refer to the information published by local authorities about daily road gritting plans. This should lead to an immediate improvement in ice forecast accuracy

2 Access the publicly available weather station sites such as Vaisala. This should provide an immediate increase in data to improve ice forecasting.

3 Make clear that when ‘temperatures’ are mentioned in forecasts that these temperatures are ‘air temperatures’

4 When frost is mentioned make clear what type of frost is intended eg hoar frost on roads or ground frost

5 At midnight the regional ‘narrative’ forecast deletes the ‘tonight’ forecast leaving just the day time forecast. However, particularly during winter months

commuter rides to work will take place when the ‘tonight’ forecast is applicable. Examples of this include occasions when ‘widespread frost’ was removed from the forecast after midnight in February 2017. This software problem should be corrected.
