8 Weather Stations

There are several publicly available web sites which show weather station data. They transmit a variety of weather data including air temperatures and, importantly, road surface temperatures. These are very important in the absence of the MET Office publishing road surface temperatures themselves.

Here is a screen print of a sample of the information available from the Traffic Scotland site

Publicly available weather station data is an important source of information

The Vaisala site http://www.trafficweather.info,  provides similar information for a number local authorities. Findley Irvine are looking into providing similar information.

Highways England are looking to use a similar portal as Traffic Scotland as advised in an email dated 13 Feb from HIghways England.

The MET Office have a data feed from the Highways England weather stations although this is not published to the public. This data is used in the MET Office’s road weather forecasting model.Hopefully the MET Office will ask Highways England to publish their weather station data in the public interest.

North Somerset Cycle Forum have requested Highways England to publish their road surface temperature data. Their letter to Highways is copied below. An encouraging reply has been received to his letter although without commitment at this stage.
