9 Ice Forecasting for individual locations in the UK

The MET Office produces hourly forecasts for 7500 individual locations in the UK. This chart shows the weather types included. Ice is one of the few major weather types that does not  appear.

On 25 August 2017 the PWSCG sent an email which stated that  ‘The 7,500 forecasts for locations across the UK available via the app are produced automatically without any human intervention and since road surface temperature is not predicted in the model adding this would entail a significant cost ‘ In response the point was made that a contour is drawn for severe weather . This allows existing software to predict which locations are forecast to experience the severe weather. If the same approach is used for all ice then significant cost should not be incurred.
